On the plane ride to the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) 2015 International Conference in Atlanta, GA, I couldn’t help but nervously review my presentation notes and handout materials, unsure of what to expect. I presented at the Super Saturday Pedagogical Poster Session - an incredible learning experience that reminded me of the importance of preparatory engagement and ended up being more colloquial than anticipated.
Any attendee can tell you that being at the conference immediately brings to mind, regardless of your preference towards cheering, the importance of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapters. It provides a flourishing environment for students to get to know thoughtful individuals in their major. I had the chance to room with two members at this conference and there’s no doubt the public relations community is lucky to have them.
Attending also gave me the opportunity to engage with persons far exceeding my experience level. As a student we get to engage with our peers and professors, but the relationship between many students and teachers is seemingly more constant than that of new and experienced practitioners. In the latter case, it’s not only important to show respect, but additionally prove yourself as an equal and worthy of a higher level of engagement. The PRSA International Conference gives students an excellent arena to practice these skills.
