As an upper division transfer student, I did not join PRSSA until the spring semester of my junior year. With not quite as much time left in my college career as I would like to take advantage of everything PRSSA has to offer, I jumped at the opportunity to attend conference and make new friends.
The keynote speaker who kicked off the morning was Todd Cooley, who works as a PR consultant. He gave us his 25 tips on how to be "terrific in times of turmoil." A couple of my favorite were to always be learning, to maintain and develop relationships, and to remember to be in the moment, take care of yourself and have fun.
The rest of the day was devoted to breakout sessions. Let me tell you, choosing just one of the sessions to go to in each block was no easy task. My favorite session of the day was about entertainment publicity because my goal is to work in sports PR after graduation. The speaker's name was Robyn Harney, who currently works for Sony Pictures Television, and she was a blast.
She didn't get a job in PR right after college, but waited until the right one came along before accepting an offer. This ties in to her first golden nugget of advice: even though it took her awhile to get a job, she never stopped interviewing. Every time she went in for an interview, she learned something new and cultivated new industry connections.
Another piece of advice she gave, and probably my favorite, reminded us to be helpful and kind to everyone we work with. The industry is small and you never know when someone you helped out at one job could be interviewing you for a new one.
Personally and professionally, this conference was more than I could have asked for.
