5 Ways To Start Your Semester Off Right

It’s no secret that college can be stressful (especially if you’re studying public relations). Instead of spending your time worrying about assignments, exams and all the other pressures that come along with college life — play some offense! Here are five easy ways to start your semester off right:

1. Get a planner. Personally, I prefer to write down everything rather than relying on my cell phone. PR practitioners need to manage their schedules efficiently — so why not start now? By writing down appointments and dates for assignments or tests, you’ll definitely reduce your stress levels.

2. Prep healthy snacks. I started doing this last semester and it really does help — it’s crazy! When you’re busy going from class to work to meetings all day, you won’t need to rush to Starbucks for a tiny, overpriced yogurt. Not only will you be more focused throughout the day, but you’ll also save some moola as a student on a budget (so you can splurge on coffee before midterms and finals)!

3. Get to know your professors right away. A lot of the time we tend to not meet with our professors until we need them — during finals week. Trust me, it’s way better to go into their office hours at least a few times right off the bat. Even if you don’t feel like you’re particularly struggling in that class, it can never hurt to network. We have so many great professors in our major, so don’t be scared. Get out there and mingle.

4. Schedule some time with an adviser. You can never be too prepared for college. Checking in with your adviser is a great way to start your semester feeling at ease. You should not only plan a meeting with your major adviser, but you should also schedule a meeting with your academic adviser and minor adviser (if you’re pursuing a minor of course). You wouldn’t believe how comforting it feels to know you’re on the right track or that you caught a mistake before it was too late.

5. Set aside time for self-care. Personally, this is the most important thing I do for myself all semester. Using the planner I previously mentioned, plan out some personal time for at least 20 minutes every day. I know this seems slightly insignificant, but it makes such a big difference. It’s so easy to get caught up in the daily stresses of college life and forget that maintaining your mental health is essential to your performance and well-being. Whether it’s meditating, running, or just lying in bed listening to your favorite tunes, you need time to unwind and relax.

These little tips may not seem like much, but give them a shot. I promise you’ll notice a positive change in your stress levels and overall mental health throughout the semester. What are some tips and tricks you have for surviving your semester? Let us know in a comment below!
