Networking. For many of us, it’s a word that induces anxiety, uncertainty and even a little stress. As a student and aspiring professional, you may be thinking: where do I start networking? Although I get a little nervous about networking, a friendly, welcoming place to start is at the New Pros of the Public Relations Society of America San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter’s events.
New Pros is a group within the PRSA SD/IC Chapter. It’s designed for public relations professionals with less than five years of experience. Every month, New Pros alternates between hosting educational and social events. These events are awesome networking opportunities for PRSSA SDSU members and here’s why:
Students are always welcome at its events. Don’t be intimidated to dive into New Pros' events as a student. The New Pros group wants students to participate! Whether it’s a social or an educational event, I always meet friendly, local professionals and even communications students from other universities. Everyone understands that attending an event where you don’t know anyone is nerve-wracking. If you get yourself out there, professionals will be impressed that you want to participate, learn and meet new people!
They’re great opportunities to connect with local, PR professionals. Local professionals from different agencies, companies and organizations attend New Pros' events — all with different experiences to share. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions about their careers, backgrounds and interests. Find out what awaits you after graduation.
Also, if you plan to establish your career in San Diego, it’s a good idea to start meeting professionals who are active in the San Diego PR community. Try going to New Pros' events every month and you’ll begin to see familiar faces. Remember, if you’re handed a business card — reach out! They gave you their contact information for a reason.
You’ll learn more about the media industry. From inviting reporters to discuss the best and worst practices of pitching to touring 10News – ABC San Diego KGTV’s newsroom, New Pros’ educational events contain valuable, out-of-classroom knowledge about the media industry. The current ideas and practices discussed at these events will give you an up-to-date, comprehensive understanding of the today’s media landscape. By taking notes at panels, touring media organizations and meeting media professionals, you’ll be exposed to important information that will improve your development as an aspiring professional.
There are so many reasons why New Pros' events are awesome networking opportunities for students like us! It’s okay to feel nervous about networking, but don’t let it stop you from going out and meeting friendly, new people. What are you looking forward to at New Pros’ events?
